Students used burnt charcoal, pencils, erasers, & rags to write, remove, blur, mix, and rewrite lines of poetry along with their own thoughts on cut up and discarded sections of an artwork found next to a trash barrel in the neighborhood . Works written about include the Chinese dissident poet Bei Dao ‘s book, “The August Sleepwalker”, the exiled Iranian poet, Fetmeh Shams and her work “When They Broke Down the Door” and poems drawn from the collection “After Every War: Twentieth-Century Women Poets” and Carolyn Forché, edited collection “Against Forgetting: Twentieth Century Poetry of Witness.”
